Jinjer - Pisces

Whilst I may have had a lot less time to write than I would have liked lately, it has allowed me to find some great music of the past year or two which I feel needs talking about. Starting off with this absolute gem from Ukrainian Metalcore/Djent fusion band Jinjer and their incredible song Pisces. Albeit released toward the latter end of 2016, the song crept into my focus with a live session video at Napalm Records. The video is put to great use, holding multiple members in view so as not to lose their intricate playing style, quick changes in pace and tone, along with the harnessed energy (most of them are seated after all). In return you follow the song through the different members, seeing the individual brilliance that culminates in the song. In the verses, you feel a sorrowful sailing that takes you into the lyrics, which seem to tell the tale of a fish. They swept out from under the woodwork, smeared in black body paint and adorned in some strange cultish masks, and are taking the UK by storm. The unnamed artists even signed to Basick Records, so it's not just us on the receiving end of the bands intense and attention-snatching videos. Sleep Token 's brand of post-rock/djent fusion will capture both your heart and your mind, whether it's the sweeping melodies of the vocal/piano mix or the haunting, driving guitar riffs that take you off into a new realm. Loathe - White Hot (Pt 1/2)

With the imminent arrival of the Loathe/Holding Absence split EP; This Is As One, I thought I'd take a quick look at the two songs already released, beginning with the more senior of the pair's, Loathe's White Hot . The first thing you'll notice is the Deftones vibe. Yeah I used the word vibe, I'm an awful human being, I know. It's with that distinct influence that the sound and measure of Loathe's previous work envelopes and integrates with their individual sound. I mean there's nothing wrong with wanting and taking influence from your idols and influences, the best artists always have, as this is how you find out what you want, and what you want the band to be. But anyway the song. Interesting lyrically, maybe the message has flown over my head or I'm missing some crucial context but, it seems to speak to me of sorrow and loss, misunderstanding and injustice.
