Now for any and all who are not aware, Holding Absence are one of Britain's best new bands (argue with me, I dare you), who have an extremely bright future ahead but what has got them heading in that direction is shrouded in darkness. I mean of course the context and subject matter of their music. Now while they have released four separate songs, with the newest coming only a few days ago, I will be looking at the song which I think says more about them than anything: Penance.
Don't think for a second that they are a one song wonder, far from it, but it was something that in particular about this song that gripped me. First of all there is what can only be described as beautiful musicianship, the ability to translate the feelings that Lucas Woodland's lyrics portray is genius. The writing and arrangement is truly sublime, with just the right balance between heavier drum/guitar sections and the emptier sections allowing more emphasis on the lyrics, which Lucas himself is well known for.
And that is the second but most important part of the song for me. The lyrics. Suffice to say that lyrics are important in any song, albeit so many bands take them for granted and don't think 100% about what they're saying and the advice they may be giving. Not so here, Holding Absence vocalist and lyricist Lucas Woodland has to be one of the best lyricists in the country. He explains feelings with the greatest of ease and elegance, able to give insight where it would be otherwise unattainable. I found that even personally this song helped me to realise some of the mistakes that I may have made in my past but that's for another time!
If you haven't already, you can find Penance on Spotify, Youtube, Apple Music etc. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bzoIno2CsZU Be sure to check out their other tracks: Permanent, Dream Of Me, Heaven Knows.
