Dream State - In This Hell

A couple of weeks back I reviewed Dream State's awesome White Lies. While I was certainly impressed with the track from the Welsh rock quintet, it needed to be followed by something of equal or greater measure, which I didn't hold back from saying. Doubtful they listened to a word I said but they've certainly brought their emotional game in this brand new banger, In This Hell.

First off, musically this track is very strong. Creative and audibly satisfying, the riffs and note choices make it very listenable. More so here than in White Lies, I feel the guitar work more accurately reflects the point and purpose of the song from a lyrical standpoint. You can feel the ebbing waves of emotion that this song rides, particularly in the short sections of drum-less lead guitar.

Once again we're given a great performance for CJ Gilpin, her vocal ability keeps on improving with every release. The strength of her range, the growing force with which she delivers the more gritty parts to her vocals are really becoming a force to be reckoned with! And not least her lyrics are fresh, not filled with cliches, but well balanced and carefully thought out.

I mean as far as hardcore goes these days, you have to put Dream State up there.

I don't see them staying this quiet for much longer, not least with their signing to Australian label UNFD at the later end of 2017 (fully deserved), but in particular the inclusion of some guest vocals by CJ on the re-imagined Arrow on In Hearts Wake's: Ark Prevails.

Dream State's February UK tour kicks off in less than a week, be sure to get yourselves down to a show! You may even catch me hanging out in Derby at The Hairy Dog on the 23rd...
