Thornhill - Reptile

The UNFD newcomers Thornhill have certainly been causing a stir in their home country of Australia having garnered the interest of Parkway Drive for their touring abilities in recent months, and whilst their reach grows over seas I wanted to take a look at their awesome single Reptile from the EP Butterfly.

Their dark mix of hardcore with more grungey elements along with a touch of nu-metal sees them create a visual and tangible atmosphere to their music, represented brilliantly in this track. The entire thing screams originality, not something that can be said for everyone, but its the contrasting yet coordinated elements that give this track its wonder and intrigue.

kicking off with the expected hardcore ferocity, straight forward in their delivery of the opening stages, but as we continue it changes. all of a sudden we're met with the haunting vocal style of singer Jacob Charlton, before descending into the djent-esc madness after the chorus.

We're met again with Jacob's haunty vocals later in the song, alongside the display of Thornhill's full range of diversity in their songwriting. I realise that I mention songwriting a lot, however with the growing ability for bands to produce DIY to a good level, pushing bands and producers further but also narrowing the gap a little, almost to the point where real, true songwriting takes full effect and full swing. Overall the track is immensely technical, bursting with riffs that'll cross your eyes.

This is the first track I'd heard from Thornhill, it captured me instantly and pushed me toward the rest of the EP, which I'll digest in time. But until we're treated to a second EP or better yet a first album, we'll just have to enjoy the bit of magic that we have right here.
