While She Sleeps - You Are We

Album reviews, album reviews!! Which to pick and which to choose?? Today we shall be looking at the recently released You Are We, the 3rd instalment from Sheffield's very own While She Sleeps.

Now I'm sure I'm not alone in thinking that Brainwashed was a little bit of an anti-climax in comparison with the infamous This Is The Six. It had its moments of course, Torment being one of them, but overall it just felt a little bit lack-lustre. HOWEVER, this is not something that we have to worry about anymore. Oh my days is it good to have WSS back to their best!

So whats the big change? Well any that know may have been lucky enough to visit the bands warehouse-come-studio hidden away in the Steel City's street. Maybe its the losing of their label and venturing independently? There could be any of a hundred reasons for the changes. Personally I think it's simply conviction and confidence.

After their debut album the band gathered a large following both at home and abroad and although the second album wasn't the injection to the youthful hearts that This Is The Six was, it still continued their growth. But I feel now more than ever they have found the confidence in themselves and the conviction to write what THEY want to and not what they might be told or believe they should try and write. They're not, they're just being themselves.

You can hear this in particular in Empire Of Silence I think, not your typical track from the hardcore kings but you still feel the Sleeps aggression alongside the unmistakable sound of Sean's lead guitar, the tone is unique and distinct but as always pulls off the most beautiful riffs and licks. The album carries all the hallmarks of the previous work, you cannot, simply cannot believe it is anyone else. Contextually the album rings through a lot of truth to our current state of affairs but ultimately talks of unification and togetherness and the need for us all to realise this.

Their is truly something beautifully unique about this band, something that won't be emulated anytime soon! I only look forward to what else they are going to bring to the fore in future!

...And the score at full time is..: 9/10
Top Picks: Wide Awake, Empire of Silence, Civil Isolation

You Are We was released independently on April 21st  2017
