Cambridgeshire's resident rockers Mallory Knox dropped their third album just 6 months ago and it's still resonating hard. I mean we have had to wait three years since their sophomore record but was it worth the wait?
I'm a big fan of this album. Granted it isn't groundbreaking and it doesn't exactly knock you out of your seat. But the big thing for me is that it's honest. It's lyrically a very open album, speaking of the trials and tribulation of holding together relationships and life when you're struggling with mental illness. Well-written and diverse enough to hold your interest for the duration, Mallory Knox seem to have shifted their dynamic.
You can still here the occasional heavy riff that was so key to their early sound, think of their Pilot EP, but it's the development toward what I suppose you would call more classic hard rock roots whilst incorporating newer, more interesting drum beats and playing around with techniques to create atmospherics. It's the retention of the elements that have worked so well for them, addition of new techniques, their growing maturity as writers and the overall ability to say exactly what they mean in the most honest way that have me hooked. Giving It Up, first track on the album, sets the tone perfectly for what is to follow across the duration.
It's a trip, a ride, through pain, loss and rebuilding in the sweetest of senses. This album will pick you up from your funk, promise! Even if you're just looking for a well produced rock record that'll have your foot tapping, you're in the perfect place (don't believe me?? Title track, listen to the solo and tell me it ain't class). And who knows, you may just find that it brings you together with someone who will change your life.
Come back in a week or so's time for my verdict on their brand new single Sugar!!
Third times the charm, but whats the harm??
