Six months on from it's release, Employed To Serve's The Warmth Of A Dying Sun just gets better and better. And the more I listen, the more I believe how important this band is going to be for the UK Hardcore scene.
It's no secret that less and less people are going out to shows. Granted it's an economical problem in that we all have less money to spend on these sorts of ventures but it also means that their are fantastic bands going out across the country to play to their fans, only to receive less than a deserved turn-out. This has to change and is, to be fair, slowly improving. This in part is because of the efforts of bands like Employed To Serve.
Employed's aggressive, original and unrelenting Hardcore is certainly something to be witnessed in the flesh. Despite the quality production and the bands efforts to carry their vigorous live shows into this second record, it is still no comparison to the real thing. But then this isn't a live review!!
The band shows a good level of improvement from their impressive debut album Greyer Than You Remember, growing their range of influence by subtly integrating different ideas to create a more dynamic record than before. It certainly has the resonance of some of Hardcore's greatest such as Converge and Norma Jean in places but it has a unique and to me distinctly British feel to it. The band has an ability to mirror the feeling present today, in their dissonant, dark and jarring writing, but also in the brutal and yet direct honesty of vocalist Justine Jones.
Employed To Serve roll into the same sphere as bands like Palm Reader, technically minded Hardcore that is simultaneously pioneering the new wave of UK Hardcore whilst being totally underrated and underappreciated!!
What are the scores, George Dawes??
