Make Them Suffer - Worlds Apart

The Australian metal scene has been growing stronger and stronger over the past 10 years, with the strength and influence that pioneers like Parkway Drive have had, arguably leading to the rise of bands like In Hearts Wake, Northlane, Polaris and Ocean Grove. One band that are continuing that growth in a really interesting way is Make Them Suffer and following on from my recent article on their new single 27 - we're gonna look at their most recent album; Worlds Apart.

Some may remember one of my earliest reviews, of the MTS track Ether. Now that preceded this album and I suppose would act as a little gateway to the 2017 release. Make Them Suffer have a really unique sound - vocally aggressive and powerful, with groovy, bouncing guitar riffs, all tied up by soft and melodic keys.

The album begins strong with The First Movement, Uncharted and Grinding Teeth. Brilliantly diverse whilst kept simple. MTS have a great ability to strike a balance between the differing elements of the band, and the different voices. These allow for a greater difference and really add a specific atmosphere, Booka's clean and almost angelic singing voice is such a juxtaposition to Sean's chaos-fuelled, bordering on barbaric vocal style, that when the two come together you feel the weight of the words through Sean and the underlying pain and suffering that can be brought out by Booka.

Vocalist Sean has a keen eye for original lyric patterns, to the extent of including what I could only call a rabid bark into a couple songs such as Vortex.

But it's the final song which really sticks in the mind. Save Yourself is one of the most direct and harshly realistic self-views I've heard, and to deliver the final lyrics in the form of spoken word poetry is simply a touch of genius and an example of what sets them apart from mainstream Deathcore/Metalcore. More so than that, you get the feeling that there's a lot more to the whole thing, potentially an extension or link to the Lord of Woe storyline.

I've been impressed with Make Them Suffer of late, creating a space for themselves in the every-growing Australian scene and to clinch that with the strength of the bands around them speaks volumes.

Worlds Apart - Bold from the start.
Final verdict from me: 7/10
Top picks: Vortex, Power Overwhelming, Dead Plains

Worlds Apart was released July 28th 2017 via Warner Bros. Australasia:
