Albion Codex - Land of the Lost

One of the main objectives and reasons for writing this blog was to shed some light on those newer, up and coming bands who may otherwise fly under the radar - and here today we have a look at one of Sheffield's newest bands looking to contend for the crown. Albion Codex are new on the Steel City's Metal scene, bringing their aggressive brand of Deathcore to the seven hills, and they've kicked off with their debut single Land of the Lost.

First thing that you will notice is how musically tight the band are, effectively using differing dynamics towards the end of the track to keep the track interesting and not one 5 minute evolving riff. It's well-written and interesting, keeps you fixed throughout with its old-school Death Metal rhythms and just a hint of newer-age influences. Clearly looking to enter the realms of greats like Suicide Silence and work there way in to the upper echelons like more recent newcomers Venom Prison.

For me the stand-out section comes towards the end where you find the track switch from its bouncy body into a thrash-esc outro with easily the most interesting riff in the song. It's this kind of change of pace that I feel could have been used earlier in the song and centred around a little more, to really elevate the track and stop a little of the monotony in the vocals.

The only real negative I have is that lyrically I don't feel it was that interesting, the vocals weren't all that varied in their delivery and rarely did I pay attention to them.

Otherwise it's a good solid start from the Sheffield-based group, they're strong musically and will grow with time as long as they continue to push themselves, their boundaries and what they can do within the genre. Time and patience will be big factors for these young guys, but they're certainly ones to watch. I'm personally looking forward to their first EP, to see where Albion Codex will go next, and what they will explore.
