It may be a little over a year old now, but Harbinger's 2017 EP 'Human Dust' is easily one of the best to have graced my ears of late. Seeming to have found their place, their technical, groovey, dark brand of metalcore is sure to go down well with fans everywhere.
Opening with End of Days, the EP kicks into gear straight from the off, offering us brutally driving guitar riffs to match the fierce vocals and melody to balance the darkness that roils in the wake of the Londoners. It has all the traits of classic thrash and death metal splashed on as well as the record progresses, and you'll find some clean vocals hanging out too in the mass.
Now it's not often you get an EP bristling with 7 tracks, so you can't make the excuse that theirs not a lot in here. But as the EP goes on we see vocalist Tom Gardner show the width and depth of his vocal range, particularly on the song (and EP namesake) Human Dust; unleashing a high-pitch scream tempered in just the right way to capture the terror and malice of the song itself.
Long-story-short, if you're looking for some new age groove metal that doesn't stink with cliches then Harbinger are the ticket! Beatdowns, original lyrics with all the character that we would expect from the best metalcore/death metal bands.
London's ever churning metal scene's newest graduates.
The verdict: 7/10
