Easily one of the most intriguing of bands currently on their way up the rungs is Liverpool based Loathe. Having made quite enough noise to make a corner for themselves with their metalcore/deathcore merged sound they have recently gone on to record their debut album, The Cold Sun.
It's dark. Like, really dark. The entire album carries a shadow with it, like it was meant for a different time or dimension all together! Even after the third or fourth time round of listening I have the same feeling as the first, like Slipknot had been brought in to write the soundtrack of the new Blade Runner. Because for all the darkness that comes across on the album, not to mention the dripping embers of black metal that come across in songs such as P.U.R.P.L.E, there is the unmistakable synthetics that are synonymous with 80's Sci-Fi films. The opening track alone gave me images of some futuristic metropolis surrounded in black clouds.
This mix of styles is certainly not something that we've seen lately. Loathe have very cleverly worked these elements into each other, the sparce darkness of old science-fiction film soundtracks, threads of black metal intertwined with the more updated metalcore/deathcore influences.
Seriously though, the level of detail and effort that has clearly been put into the writing of this album is top notch! And if this is their idea of a debut album, I am very much looking forward to what they may create with more confidence and experience, both of which they will undoubtedly gain in the near future.
The curtain comes to draw, but what? Whatever are the scores?
Scouse Sci-fi soundtrack: 7/10
Top picks: East Of Eden, Loathe, Babylon...
