Czech Republic-based Recode The Subliminal don't have the biggest following, however in their small online fanbase their debut album really seemed to strike a chord, with an almost cult like following seeming to arise. Released just over 18 months ago, it sets a pretty big standard for the band to follow!
Now although based in Prague, Czech Republic and most of the band hailing from the Republic, they have an American vocalist and lyricist and I think there's something fundamental in that. I often find that when bands whose native language is not English but choose to write in English to push their listener base and branch out to the UK, US and Australian markets tend to lose a little of their message in translation. But with the help of a native speaker, the sometimes broken English of other European bands, is of no concern.
The fusion between these two elements has created a truly unique record and is truly something to behold, the whole piece flows together perfectly song to song, each one showcasing the diversity in their writing style, particularly Ordinary Heroes. The track sits at #8 on the track listing and throws away any screamed vocals for pure clean singing for the majority of the song. But I could dive into any one of the songs on this album to tell you why I love it, instead all I'll say is that after 18 months + i'm still playing this monthly.
The Cost Of Everyman is an extremely well-rounded record with the perfect balance of the traditional Metalcore elements. Clean singing and screaming in equal measure, balanced based on the needs of the track and the message on display. Equally well measured are the guitars, no overbearingly long solo madness but instead we find well written and well placed riffs with lead licks to take you from one section to another. Of course there's a solo or two but they seem restrained and thought out rather than just there for the sake of it.
A great start to what could be one of the best Continental bands we've seen of late.
Intercontinental Metalcore Fusion: 7/10
Top picks: Not My War, Ordinary Heroes, Black Mirror (Bonus Track)
