Polaris - The Mortal Coil

It's here! We don't have to wait any longer! Polaris have finally unleashed on us their debut album and OH. MY. DAYS is it good! Truly and honestly, I haven't looked forward to an album release this much in at least the past 5 years, with the exception of Architects' All Our Gods Have Abandoned Us. But that's besides the point right now, The Mortal Coil is here, and that's all that matters.

Some may have read my reviews of the albums single's Consume/The Remedy and if you've checked them out, you'll know what I'm talking about already, but first off the bat I want to talk about the latest single release before the album: Lucid.

It's exceptional. Simply bliss to the ears. Lucid opens the album beautifully, hitting you hard in the face, setting the pace for what's to follow and melting you down to a mere shadow of your former self. You'll know exactly which riff I'm referring to here, it's just incredible. This is Polaris in a nutshell. Their style, creativity and brute force all in equilibrium.

Now for the rest. The album is unashamedly about the pain and struggle that is living in the world today. We play up to social 'norms' that to many of us don't understand. We feel the need to concede to assumptions and conventions that leave us feeling hollow and empty. And to deal with this, we destroy ourselves, we search for remedies and reasons to allow us to carry on.

Truthfully this album is beautiful. Honestly I didn't think that Polaris could be any more open about themselves. And yet I'm simply in awe of this record. All that is left to say is; thank you Polaris.

My awful attempts at making funnies before revealing my scores
