Take yourself back to Summer 2016 and Aussie death squad Make Them Suffer released the fantastic single Ether to precede the release of their second album Worlds Apart. I wanted to take a look at Ether before anything else as this was the first track I had heard from the band. And with that I found it actually says a lot about the band themselves than one would assume at first glance.
I'm a big fan of bands using weird and more interesting structures in songs. The introduction is beautiful, the combination of keys and the eery lead guitar work so well together and creates all the more impact when the main rhythm guitars crash in after the opening line: 'There's nothing left of you...' Continuing deeper into the song we find that the chorus is followed by a gutteral and brutal breakdown/middle eighth which is seen a second time later in the song. Strong structural diversity shows a greater musical intelligence and thus a more expansive musical mind within the band and their writing and it is upon theses elements that we shall see if they can really stand the test of time. To be fair it's been over a year and I still get goosebumps from this song.
Also worth a mention is the bands inclusion of a keys player, which we can safely say isn't exactly a staple of deathcore/metalcore bands of the past 5/10 years. But it certainly creates a unique sound for the band. I find that the keys actually free up the guitarist to try new things and not focus so much on recreating a synth sound with pedals and or sample pedals.
So all in all, Ether is a great example of the musical and emotional intelligence of this band and certainly Make Them Suffer are one of Australia's bands to watch out for!
Following this sometime in the next week, I'll be taking a look at their most recent release.
