It's been almost two years so since Polaris gifted us with The Guilt & The Grief, their second EP, however in July we welcomed Consume, the first of two singles to be released in the fore running to their debut album, The Mortal Coil. Suffice to say that Polaris had me hooked from the first time I clapped my ears on The Guilt & The Grief and I, like so many others, have been waiting with quiet anticipation for the next instalment. But before we get to the album itself let us look at the glimpses we do have so far:
Consume
Certainly it can't be mistaken for anyone but Polaris, though the opening riff would have you feeling the harrowing hallmarks of recent Northlane material about it, not that I have anything against Northlane but the similarity was uncanny. That said from their on in is where the real magic begins. The writing power of Polaris is evident straight away, how the lyrics and instruments move, shift and compliment each other, not to mention the peculiar structure of the song itself. Strong vocals from Jamie Hails and Jake Steinhauser once again show their ability and progression from The Guilt & The Grief, this roaring fusions of vocal styles will no doubt be echoed in The Mortal Coil.
The Remedy
Now this track really blew me away, the introduction alone has enough groove and funk to get anyone head-banging their way to work in a morning. The bouncing guitars mixed with the soaring vocal melody of the chorus showcase the hardcore elements of the band beautifully, not to mention the baddest beatdown I've heard in months and months. Face melting: complete. But there's something else about the song, maybe it's the subtlety of the nu metal influence on the band, or perhaps I'm simply getting giddy for a band who haven't yet (as far as I'm aware) succumb to cliche.
So yeah... Polaris. Pretty good start so far but can this really continue? The strength of their last release The Guilt & The Grief would definitely seem to point that way, and it has to be said that both Consume and The Remedy are strong but my worry is that they may have played their strongest cards already.
You can find both of Polaris's EP's to download, as well as streams of both The Remedy and Consume over at: polarisaus.bandcamp.com
Be sure to come back in November for my full digestion!!
